- Local Area Information:
- Brevard is a quiet, peaceful little community located within the Pisgah National Forest of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. It lies in the heart of Transylvania County and is known as the "land of the waterfalls and home to the white squirrel." These fascinating little creatures thrive in the Brevard area, and are truly snow white in color. They are so loved by the residents of Transylvania County, that an ordinance was approved in 1986, making it unlawful to hunt, trap or kill any of the protected squirrels. Brevard, in Transylvania County, is also home to some of the state's most stunning scenery - more than 250 waterfalls, 200 miles of waterways and 470 miles of hiking trails can be found in the area. To say it's a mecca for vacationers and naturalists is an understatement. Just a few of the recreational opportunities available include camping, fishing, horseback riding, rock-climbing, backpacking, swimming, whitewater rafting, canoeing and golf. It is also the site of some of the best mountain biking trails in the east. There are close to two hundred well-marked biking trails in the Pisgah National Forest, all of them closely following the waterfalls and trout streams, and sometimes climbing to nearly 5000 feet. Brevard also has lots of shopping and dining options, and the Brevard Music Center and the Brevard College Performing Arts Center.
